How often should you replace a urinal screen?

Every urinal screen package carries a lifespan number, and every experienced custodian knows those numbers are best-case. Here is what the makers of the screens we rank actually claim, what changes the real interval, and a simple routine that keeps replacements on schedule.

What the labels claim

  • Fresh Products advertises 30 days for the Wave 3D and builds reminder date tabs into the screen itself (Fresh Products product page, checked October 2026).
  • Diversey markets the ekcoscreen at up to 60 days, the longest claim in our lineup (Ekcos product page, checked October 2026).
  • The Hospeco AirWorks Splash Free is listed at up to 30 days (retailer listing, checked October 2026).
  • XirBaig’s 20-pack listing describes about 10 to 30 days depending on traffic, the most honest range we have seen (seller listing, checked October 2026).

Notice the pattern: the number on the package assumes conditions your restroom may not share.

What shortens the real interval

Traffic is the big one. A screen in an airport bar restroom works far harder than one in a small office. Ventilation matters too: a stuffy room makes a faded screen obvious sooner. Cleaning chemicals can strip fragrance early, and a screen that has shifted off the drain will underperform regardless of age. Fragrance preference cuts both ways: some people notice fade fast, others barely register it.

A simple replacement routine

Keep a one-line log per fixture: install date, scheduled replacement date, and a note on condition at change-out (“still fragrant,” “faded at 3 weeks”). Two or three cycles of notes tell you the real interval for that fixture better than any label. The Wave 3D’s pull-off date tabs do a lightweight version of this on the screen itself. If you manage several restrooms, stagger install dates so a single trip covers everything due that week.

When it is not the screen

If odor returns within days of a fresh screen, the screen is not the problem. Urine scale in the trap, a failing seal, or grout that needs treatment will overpower any fragrance. That is a cleaning or plumbing job, and no product in our lineup will substitute for it.
